Four things every applicant has to work out before they apply: your German grade, your ECTS credits, whether your university is recognised, and what your education loan actually costs. All on one page.
German universities grade from 1.0 (best) to 5.0 (fail). This uses the Modified Bavarian Formula, the method uni-assist and most German public universities apply to foreign grades.
Your grading system
Pick your scale, or enter the limits manually.
Top of your scale — 10 for CGPA, 100 for percentage.
Your pass mark — 4 for CGPA, 40 for percentage.
Exactly as printed on your transcript, in the same units as above.
The formula
German grade = 1 + 3 × (Nmax − Nd) ÷ (Nmax − Nmin)

Meaning
Read this before you quote the number
This is the standard formula, but it is a planning estimate — not a binding conversion. uni-assist applies country-specific adjustments (for some Indian boards it treats Nmin as 35, not 40) and issues the legally binding grade on your VPD. Individual universities such as TUM publish their own variants. Always confirm with your target university.
Work out your ECTS credits
Under the European Credit Transfer System, 60 ECTS = one full academic year. German universities use ECTS (also called Leistungspunkte or LP) to check whether your degree carries enough credit.
Your degree
Duration is the official ECTS anchor — start here.
Actual full-time duration of the programme.
Workload cross-check
Optional. Some applications ask for ECTS derived from teaching hours.
Taught hours across the whole degree, from your transcript or syllabus.
Contact hours plus the self-study, projects and exam prep that go with them.
1 ECTS = 25–30 hours of total student workload
That includes lectures, labs, self-study, group projects and exam preparation — not just time in class. A full-time semester is 30 ECTS, roughly 750–900 hours.
If you hold a 3-year Bachelor
By duration a 3-year degree maps to 180 ECTS, which is the same as a German Bachelor. But many German Master's programmes still ask 3-year graduates for an additional qualifying year, and anabin often lists these degrees as H+/-. ECTS alone does not decide admission — the university also checks recognition, subject match and any minimum-credit rule. Check the specific programme page.
Is your university recognised in Germany?
anabin is the German government's official database of foreign institutions, run by the ZAB under the KMK. It rates each institution H+, H+/- or H- — the gate almost every German pathway starts from.
Type at least 2 letters. Abbreviations work — IIT finds every IIT.
What the ratings mean
anabin rates the institution, not your individual degree.
H+Recognised as comparable to a German Hochschule. Clears the institution-level gate.
H+/-Decided case by case — some qualifications from that institution count, some do not.
H-Not rated equivalent. A Studienkolleg route or an individual ZAB assessment may still be possible.
H+ is necessary, not sufficient
It confirms the institution. Your specific degree still has to be assessed as equivalent, and each pathway adds its own criteria — grade conversion and language for study, salary thresholds for a Blue Card.
Where you actually need this
It is not only about a Master's.
1University admission at Bachelor's and Master's level.
2Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) — a recognised degree makes you a skilled worker immediately.
3EU Blue Card, skilled-worker and job-seeker visas — all need your degree shown comparable to a German one.
4Later steps — job recognition, family reunification, permanent residency.
Our coverage, stated honestly
Anabin has no public API or data export, so this list is maintained by hand from official anabin records rather than synced live. If your institution is not here, that does not mean it is unrecognised — it may be an affiliated college listed under its parent university, recorded under a different or older name, or simply not in our list yet. Always confirm on the official anabin site before you rely on a status for a visa or admission decision.
What your education loan will really cost
Your EMI is only half the picture. The part that surprises most families is the moratorium — the study period when you are not paying, but interest is still building.
Loan terms

Course duration plus the grace period your bank allows, usually 6–12 months after you finish.
Unpaid interest gets added to your principal, so your EMI is calculated on a larger amount.

An estimate, not a sanction letter
Banks differ on how they capitalise moratorium interest, and most add processing fees, insurance and sometimes forex margins on top. Floating rates move. Use this to compare offers and plan — then confirm the exact figures with your lender in writing.
