What exactly is TestAS?

TestAS is an aptitude test — not a language test, and not a syllabus exam. You cannot "study" your way through it the way you'd cram for boards. It measures how well your brain handles the kind of thinking a German degree demands.

The one-line version: TestAS is run by g.a.s.t. e.V. — the same German body behind TestDaF and onSET. It gives German universities one fair yardstick to compare a student from Gujarat with a student from Vietnam, Brazil or Ghana, whose school systems are nothing alike.

The mindset that wins: because TestAS tests aptitude, the single biggest gain comes from knowing the format cold — question types, timing, and the trap patterns. That is exactly what the free papers in Tab 7 give you. A student who has worked through them is not solving a surprise; they're repeating a rehearsal.

Direction of travel: g.a.s.t. has signalled that the digital format is meant to replace paper eventually. Both were still running in 2026 and no cut-off date has been announced — but if you're indifferent, digital is the safer long-term habit.

Universities don't prefer one over the other. A digital score and a paper score are officially interchangeable via the conversion table — which you can download free in Tab 7 (Score Conversion Table).

Exactly what you'll face, question by question

Every TestAS = Core Module (everyone, same paper) + one Subject Module (your choice). They are booked together and sat on the same day — you cannot split them.

Figure Sequences	20	25 min	A row of picture-matrices where shapes shift position, colour and/or orientation by a hidden rule. Work out the rule, predict the next matrix.
Mathematical Equations	20	25 min	Letters A–T each stand for a number from 1–20. A set of equations must all hold true at once. Find the values that satisfy every condition.
Latin Squares	20	25 min	A 5×5 grid where every letter appears exactly once per row and once per column. Deduce which letter belongs in the marked cell.

Two short 2-minute desk breaks sit inside the Core Module, then a 30-minute break outside the exam room before your Subject Module.

The "testlet" format: you get 10–15 testlets. Each testlet is a short text, diagram, dataset or case, followed by 4–8 questions hanging off it. Read once properly, then answer the whole cluster — this is where speed is won or lost.

Open the admission regulations of each shortlisted programme. If a module is named, that decision is made for you — stop here.

Which module matches my degree family?

Match the degree, not your favourite subject. Applying for BBA but love biology? You still take Economics.

If your shortlist mixes Engineering and CS, pick the module matching your strongest, most likely offer — you can only submit one module per certificate, and scores from different attempts can't be combined.

Reading your result

How TestAS is scored — and what's actually "good"

There is no pass or fail in TestAS. You get a position on a scale, and each university decides what that position is worth to them.

Digital scale

TestAS Score 0–200 for the Core Module and 0–200 for the Subject Module → overall 0–400. Plus a percentile rank 1–100.

📄

Paper scale

Standard Score 70–130 per module (100 = average). Plus a percentile rank 1–100. Convertible to the digital scale via the official table.

Core and Subject are reported separately. There is no single merged grade on the certificate — universities see both numbers and weight them however their rules say.

Percentile rank, in plain English: a percentile of 60 means 60% of all test takers worldwide scored the same or lower than you. This is usually the number universities rank applicants by — it matters more than the raw score.

Deadlines are hard. Digital closes about 1 week before the exam; paper closes about 5 weeks before. Miss it and your only option is the next sitting.

g.a.s.t. does not publish a public price list. There are three country price groups, and the exact fee for your country and test centre is shown on screen during online registration. Anyone quoting you one fixed global figure is guessing.

TestAS runs on fixed dates worldwide, a few times a year — historically clustered around Feb/March and Oct/Nov, with the digital version offering more dates than paper. The live calendar sits inside account.gast.de. Because dates and seats vary by centre and change without notice, we don't publish a static date list here — check the portal, or message us and we'll confirm the current dates for your city.

Must carry

Valid photo ID — passport or national ID. It must be the exact same document you used when booking.
Paper test: a black or blue ballpoint pen (centres inside Germany supply pens).
Digital test: access to your registration confirmation email (participant number + exam ID).

Know before you go

Digital: no notes of any kind. Everything happens on screen and in your head.
A different ID from the one you booked with can cost you the seat.
Leaving early = no refund, and the attempt still counts.

Official line from g.a.s.t.: familiarising yourself with the format is the preparation. Unlimited retakes are allowed, but "significant score improvements through repetition alone are unlikely." Translation: format fluency and timing beat grinding.

Redo Core and module strictly timed. Inferring Relations is only 10 minutes for 22 items — that alone needs rehearsing. Digital students: practise with no rough paper, because that's the real condition.

Week 4 — Full dress rehearsal

Sit the older task collections (fresh questions you haven't seen) as one full mock, in one sitting, with the real breaks. Then unlock the demo test inside your participant portal to get used to the actual digital interface. Read the exam-day rules. Sleep.

About the "older task collections": these are earlier official booklets g.a.s.t. published before the current edition. The questions are completely different, which makes them ideal as a second, unseen mock after you've used up the main booklet.

Frequently asked questions

Is TestAS compulsory for Indian students? +

Not universally. For India, whether you need TestAS depends on the individual university — some German institutions require it as part of the application, many don't. Indian applicants go through the APS procedure for document verification regardless. Always check the admission page of each shortlisted programme before booking.

What's the difference between TestAS and dMAT? +

TestAS → Bachelor's. dMAT → selected Master's. They are separate exams for separate stages.

Per APS India, applicants for Master's programmes in Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business or Management must take the dMAT from Summer Semester 2027 onwards — and the APS certificate is only issued once the dMAT certificate has been submitted and checked. Bachelor's, PhD and exchange applicants are outside the dMAT requirement. If you're heading to a Master's, dMAT is your exam, not TestAS.

Can TestAS replace the Studienkolleg? +

At some universities, yes — a growing number now accept a strong TestAS result (usually alongside C1 German) as an alternative to the Studienkolleg and FSP route, letting you apply directly to a Bachelor's. This is not a blanket national rule and varies by university and programme, so it must be confirmed in that university's own admission regulations. It is one of the strongest reasons to take TestAS seriously.

Is there a pass mark? +

No. TestAS has no pass or fail. You receive a score and a percentile rank, and each university decides what that is worth — as a ranking tool, a cut-off, or bonus points.

How many times can I take it? +

Unlimited. But g.a.s.t. states plainly that repeating alone rarely produces a big jump — it's an aptitude test, not a syllabus exam. If you retake, change your preparation, not just the date. Note that scores from different attempts cannot be combined; you submit one certificate.

Does my TestAS certificate expire? +

No expiry date at all. Sit it in your final school year and it's still valid whenever you apply. You can re-download a fresh copy from your participant portal any time, free.

Should I take TestAS in English or German? +

Your choice — both versions are equally valid. Most Indian students take it in English. A few universities specify the language, so check first. You need roughly B1 in whichever language you pick; it isn't a language test, but you must read questions quickly and accurately under time pressure.

How much does TestAS cost in India? +

g.a.s.t. uses three country price groups and publishes no public price list — the exact fee appears on screen during registration at account.gast.de for your country and centre. Figures floating around the internet vary wildly and several are outdated. Create a free account to see the real price before paying, or message us and we'll check it for you.

Where are the test centres in India? +

g.a.s.t. has licensed centres in around 100 countries. The live list of centres and their open dates is only visible through the test-centre finder and the booking portal — it isn't published as a fixed page, because availability changes each cycle. Tell us your city and we'll confirm your nearest active centre.

Can I get a refund if I fall sick? +

No. Illness gives no refund and no right to reschedule. The only refund route is cancelling before the registration period closes, which returns your fee minus a 15% admin charge. Book a date you're confident about.

Are real past TestAS papers available anywhere? +

No — and they never have been. g.a.s.t. does not release used exam papers. The official model/sample booklets (all free in Tab 7) are the only authentic practice material that exists. Anything sold as a "TestAS previous year paper" is fabricated. Use the official booklets plus the portal demo test.

Do I need computer skills for the digital test? +

No special skills at all — it's straightforward on-screen clicking. The one real adjustment is that no rough paper is allowed, so practise your working mentally beforehand. Once registered, use the demo test in your portal to get used to the interface.
