Chancenkarte

Your gateway to live, work, and build a career in Germany without a job offer.

Want to know

What is Chancenkarte?

The Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card) is a new visa by the German government to tackle its major labor shortage. It allows skilled professionals worldwide to move to Germany and search for a job without a prior job offer, making it a flexible gateway to one of Europe’s strongest economies.

With a current shortage of 700,000 workers and a projected gap of 7 million by 2035, the Chancenkarte creates opportunities for both professionals and Germany’s workforce. This guide covers eligibility, application steps, budget planning, and life after arrival to help you start your career journey in Germany.

No Job Offer Required

Unlike a traditional work visa, you do not need a pre-existing job contract to apply.

Flexibility

Stay in Germany for a year while job hunting, during which you’re allowed to work part-time (up to 20 hours a week) and take short trial jobs of up to two weeks with potential employers.

Purpose

It is designed to attract skilled workers to sectors with high demand, such as IT, engineering, healthcare, and skilled trades

Conversion

Once you secure a full-time job, you can seamlessly convert your Chancenkarte into a long-term residence permit or an EU Blue Card.

Who can apply?

You can apply for the Chancenkarte in one of two ways:

OPTION 1

Full Recognition of Your Qualification

If your foreign university degree or vocational training is fully recognized in Germany, you can apply directly without using the points system.

How to Check:

Use the Anabin database to see if your university and degree are listed as “recognized” or “comparable.”

If not, you can apply for a formal Statement of Comparability from the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB).

OPTION 2

The Points System

If your qualification is not fully recognized, you must earn a minimum of 6 points based on the following criteria:

  • Basic Requirement: A university degree or two-year vocational training recognized by your home country.
  • Language Skills: German A1 or English B2 proficiency.
  • Financial Proof: Evidence of sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay (€1,091 per month).

How to Earn 6 Points?

To qualify under the points system, you can accumulate points in these categories:

  • 4 Points: For a foreign qualification that is "partially recognized" or has a "Statement of Comparability" from ZAB.
  • +1 Point: If your qualification is in a designated shortage occupation (e.g., IT, engineering, healthcare, or skilled trades).
  • 1 Point: German language skills at A2 level.
  • 2 Points: German language skills at B1 level.
  • 3 Points: German language skills at B2 level or higher.
  • +1 Point: English language skills at C1 level or if you are a native English speaker.
  • 1 Point: If you have legally resided in Germany for at least six months in the last five years (e.g., as a student, intern, or au pair).
  • 2 Points: For 2 years of work experience in the last 5 years (relevant to your qualification).
  • 3 Points: For 5 years of work experience in the last 7 years.
  • 2 Points: If you are 35 years old or younger at the time of application.
  • 1 Point: If you are between 35 and 40 years old.
  • 1 Point: If your spouse or registered partner also meets the requirements for the Chancenkarte.

Step-by-Step Guide

The process may vary slightly depending on your country and local German Embassy/Consulate.

Step 1
Self-Assessment & Document Preparation (1-3 months)

Calculate your points to ensure you meet the 6-point minimum.

Gather all required documents:

  • Valid Passport: Must be issued within the last 10 years.
  • Biometric Photos: Two recent photos.
  • Proof of Funds: Blocked bank account or a Declaration of Commitment from a German resident.
  • Proof of Qualification: University degree, vocational certificate, and ZAB/Anabin documentation.
  • Language Certificates: Official certificates for German (A1 or A2+) and/or English (B2+).
  • Resume/CV: German-style.
  • Health Insurance: Proof of travel insurance for the initial entry period.
Step 2
Book Your Visa Appointment (2-4 weeks)

Visit the website of the German Embassy or Consulate in your country.

Book a visa appointment for a "Long-Stay Visa" (specifically for the Chancenkarte, if available). Note that appointments can have a long waiting time

Step 3
Attend the Visa Interview (1-2 hours)

Bring all original documents and two identical, complete sets of photocopies.

Be prepared to answer questions about your motivation for moving to Germany and your financial situation.

Step 4
Visa Processing (6-8 weeks)

The embassy will process your application. You will be notified by email or phone when a decision is made.

If approved, your Chancenkarte visa will be stamped in your passport. This is usually valid for six months, allowing you to enter Germany.

Step 5
Arrive in Germany (Within 6 months of visa issuance)

Enter Germany and begin your job search.

Within two weeks of arrival, you must register your address at the local Residents' Registration Office (Bürgeramt).

Book an appointment with the local Foreigners' Office (Ausländerbehörde) to apply for your one-year residence permit. This converts your entry visa into a full Chancenkarte.
